What are the Stages of Grief?

Grief can arise for many reasons, whether it's moving to a new home or losing a loved one and having to schedule cremation services in Greece, NY. The part that becomes complicated is the different stages experienced with this emotion. If an individual has never been through it before, it might cause some confusion on how to navigate it. We have listed the five stages to help anyone going through the process, so here is more.

Denial is one of the first emotions that can come up as an individual goes through the process, and this reaction is in place because it helps reduce the amount of pain that may be occurring from the loss. It takes time to accept the reality of what has happened, and denial is there to slow the process down and make it more manageable.

This stage is very common because, in some situations, it's a more acceptable emotion for an individual to express and because the loss can create a sense of emotional discomfort. The anger can be a way to have an outlet for the feelings coming up and offer a chance to start releasing them.

For some individuals, a last may create a feeling of desperation inside them because of their experience. They may be looking for ways to reduce the amount of pain they're going through, so bargaining can look like them offering to change behaviors in exchange for healing the individual or prevent the loss at all. Because grief can create a sense of helplessness in the individual, bargaining can offer some sense of control over the emotions experienced and this situation.

Depression is the next stage that can occur, and it's when an individual begins to understand that the loss has occurred. It's accepting that bargaining is no longer an option, and they will have to face the reality of the individual being gone. Sadness is a common state during this emotion, so it's essential to have extra support to get through this process.

The last stage is called acceptance, and it doesn't mean that no depression or anger is happening; it simply means that the resistance has gone around what has happened. Acceptance is the starting place towards moving through grief and into a space of learning to live without the individual.
