It doesn't matter what time of year you lose a loved one it can all be challenging to understand the process. But specific times of the year can make it more complicated such as holidays or birthdays. If you or someone you know have had to look at funeral homes in Irondequoit, NY, there may be an anticipation of more grief with specific days, so understanding ways to navigate them can make it easier.

Practicing Patience

Losing a loved one can be life-changing, and it's essential to be mindful that compassion is a critical factor that can help with emotions. Grief is a process, and it has been said that it can take five stages to get through it, so one of the primary things to be mindful of is to be patient with your own emotions or others as the feelings are arising.

This can also be applied if you are helping to support someone who is going through the experience of grief and to understand that they need to go through the emotions they are experiencing. Not trying to change what is happening and accepting what can be a large part of allowing healing.

Changing Traditions

If your loved one was a large part of family gatherings and spent a lot of time planning and arranging events, this can put extra pressure on you and other family members once the loved one has passed away. You may consider making changes to the traditions in a way that will honor where your life is now without the individual. This process could include adding or removing different recipes or changing destinations you may have generally traveled to for the holidays.

In addition, if you're choosing to keep the same traditions, it's not uncommon to still find a way to include the loved one in the event, so finding the methods that can truly honor them around the holidays can be a healing process.

Making Boundaries

Grief is different for each person, and there may be events or celebrations that you or your loved one may not feel like participating in. This is not unreasonable, and it is healthy to create boundaries and say no if this is needed for self-care. Taking the time to ensure that you are getting the appropriate amount of rest and lowering stress levels as much as possible is a priority to helping with the healing.

The holidays may be a more emotional time, but there are ways to help offer some peace and compassion for yourself and others around you who are grieving. Making compassion and care a priority could help create connection and promote healing around the loss, and Farrell-Ryan Funeral Home is to help.
