Sergej Chernjavsky

August 6, 1929 — January 5, 2020

Sergej Chernjavsky died peacefully on January 5 at the age of 90, following complications from a difficult battle with Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Valeria; children Catherine Haritonoff (Greg), Alex Chernavsky (Audrey Kramer), and the Rev. Nicholas Chernjavsky (Christine); and grandchildren Paul, Sasha, Patrick, Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Andrew.

Sergej was born in Europe to parents of Russian descent. During World War II, he and his mother were captured by Germans and sent to work in a labor camp. Following the end of the war, he refused to return to his communist-dominated homeland and chose to emigrate to America. He graduated from Utica Free Academy and went on to study at Syracuse University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He spent most of his working life employed at General Motors.

Sergej was very active in his Russian Orthodox parish in Rochester. At a young age, he was elected as church warden, a position he held for about 50 years. He was friendly, energetic, and dedicated to his family, church, and many friends. In later years, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working with them on various fun projects. He was an animal lover who adopted a dog from an animal shelter, and also helped save many homeless cats. He will be missed by his family, friends, parish, and all who knew him.

Panikhida will be held Tuesday 6 pm at Holy Ascension of Christ Orthodox Church. Funeral Service Wednesday 12:30pm at Holy Ascension of Christ Orthodox Church. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.
