Anne E. Schmutz died on October 21, 2024, due to complications stemming from an infection and an underlying condition (Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)). She was born on March 5, 1956 in Little Rock Arkansas. She graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1974 and attended The College of William and Mary in Virginia graduating in 1978 with a degree in English. She concluded her education earning a Masters degree in Library Science with a specialty in Special Libraries from Queens College (CUNY). She married John Stephan in December 1978. They had no children. She is survived by her husband, a sister (Julie Duro) and Julie's partner (Greg Cap).
As a child, Anne assisted her mother in various tasks associated with the establishment of the Kindergarten Education Enrichment Program (KEEP) in Little Rock, which served as one of the three main models that the Federal Government used in development of the Head Start program.
Among the jobs Anne held were as Library Assistant for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (in Rockefeller Center, NYC, NY), 1980-1982. She moved across 6th Avenue the be a Research Librarian for Time Inc. (also Rockefeller Center, NYC), Where she was responsible for research and fact checking for all Time, Inc. publications and corporate offices in subjects ranging from the sciences to politics, international affairs, business & economics, popular culture, movies, etc. before and after merger with Warner Communications.
She was the Temporary Assistant Head of Reference from 1986 to 1987. Her next position was as Director of the Library at the National Retail Merchants Association (NRMA) in NYC. While at NRMA (now called National Retail Federation (NRF), she authored "A Selected Bibliography of Retailing" (1990). Her last job in NYC was back across 6th Avenue with NBC
(1995-1996), doing research for a number of TV productions (e.g., Nightly News, Dateline, the Today Show) for both national and local broadcast. Relocating to Buffalo in 1996, she was a research analyst for The University at Buffalo where she worked in the research department compiling and writing profiles of foundations, individuals and companies for use by development officers seeking funding for university programs. Anne's last position was as a Development Associate with Dutchess Outreach (in Poughkeepsie, NY), a not-for-profit organization that engaged in various charitable activities in Dutchess County mainly providing hot lunches (in the lunchbox) and packaged food from the organization's food pantry. Her work involved developing mailing lists and giving level listings to facilitate the work of staff and board members. She also put together a list of grant makers with programs consistent with the work of Dutchess Outreach and wrote proposals for grants to help provide funding for Dutchess Outreach.
