Douglas Unell

Douglas Jay Unell, Age 83 of Greece, New York passed away peacefully on January 7, 2022. He is predeceased by his parents, Abraham Unell and Mary Unell Rose and sister Lois Kocher. Doug is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Suzanne Unell, his twin brother, David Lee Unell, as well as daughters, Karin (Nikhil) Shah, Sarah (Bruce) Ha, Catherine (Jim) Ludwig, seven grandchildren, Anthony, Natalie, Sophie, Roman, Grace, Phoebe, Emilie, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.



Doug graduated from Johnson City, NY in 1956. He earned his Bachelors in Education from Syracuse University in 1960. He taught at Vestal Center Elementary and Glenwood Elementary while obtaining his Masters of Education from SUNY Cortland. After moving to Rochester, he taught at Munn School in Spencerport while he completed his advanced degree at SUNY Brockport. After completion, he transferred to Taylor Elementary, where he spent the remainder of his career teaching in grades 3 through sixth.



A diehard Syracuse University sports and New York Mets fan, Doug enjoyed taking cruises and spending time with his grandchildren. Throughout his life, Doug was a talented vocalist, beginning at Syracuse University and continuing with the Greece Choral Society and the Aldergate Methodist Church choir. He was president of the Spencerport Central Retirees Association at the time of his death.



A celebration of Doug’s life will be announced at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Western New York, www.KFWNY.org.
