James "Gene" Johnson

May 19, 1934 — September 20, 2024

Passed away peacefully at home September 20, 2024, at age 90 surrounded by his family. He is predeceased by his parents and four siblings. Survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Rita; children Jim (Pat), Tom (Kathy), Mark (Leslie), Julie (David) Smith, Kathy (John) Bianchi, Dan (Tina); grandchildren Tyler, Kyle, Jamie, Connor, Phelan (Tom) Weber, Ryan (Megan), Calvin, Mitchell, Sadie, Johnny, Sami, Mackenzie, & Maddie; sister Pat Reichert; several nieces & nephews; in-laws Midge Monte & Bob (Sandra) Steinle.


After receiving bachelors and master’s degrees from SUNY Brockport, Gene worked for the Greece Central School District for 37 years. In his roles as Teacher, Coach, Athletic Director, Vice Principal and Principal he positively influenced and mentored thousands of young adults. In addition, he volunteered countless hours as Chairman of the Section 5 and NYS Basketball Committees and supporting important organizations such as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Special Olympics.

After retirement, Gene split his time between his passions, his family and golf at his home away from home, Lakeshore Country Club.


A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30AM Thursday, September 26 at Our Mother of Sorrows Church and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Lakeshore Country Club from Noon - 3:00pm.
