Ruperto Bales Sarmiento, a WW2 veteran, faithful husband, father and grandfather, age 96, a long time resident of Hyde Park, NY and currently residing in Rochester, NY , died peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2023.
Born on April 4, 1926, in the Philippines, he left high school at the beginning of WW2, and joined the Filipino Guerillas fighting the Japanese. Later during the war, his “Bolo Unit” was battlefield inducted to the United States Army for the remainder of the WW2 (Company B, 121 Inf. USAFIP-NL US Army Forces in Philippines – Northern Luzon). After WW2, He worked as a civilian mechanic at Clark’s Airforce Base repairing the C-46 Troop Transport Planes.
Ruperto returned to school and College at FEATI University and completed his Bachelor’s Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and became a Board Certified Junior Mechanical Engineer in 1954. On June 20th 1958 he married Venus Buccat in La Union San Juan Philippines, his beloved wife of 61 years who passed in May 2020.
After completion of the Hydroelectric dam projects in the Philippines, he went with US-AID to build the Kabul and Kandahar-International Airports and Girishk Hydroelectric powerplants. In 1968 , he emigrated to the United States in Hyde Park, NY where was employed at IBM Poughkeepsie, NY as Facilities Engineer and retired as a Senior Engineering Advisor at IBM.
He is survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Ruperto (Gerry) & Marie Sarmiento, Jr.; daughter, Rovena Fanitzi; son and daughter-in-law - Arjay & Dr. Stacey Sarmiento, Rochester, NY; Brother Guil Sarmiento Manteca, CA; grandsons, Alan, Nicholas, and Patrick Fanitzi; granddaughter, Abigail Sarmiento, as well as many nieces & nephews and extended family. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brothers Dr. Crescencio Sarmiento and Desiderio Sarmiento and his son-in-law, James Fanitzi.
Ruperto will be buried next to his wife Venus at Union Cemetery Hyde Park, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet's Funeral Home, Hyde Park NY and Farrell-Ryan Funeral Services, Rochester NY.
Calling hours at Sweets Funeral Home will be Friday March 31, 2023 from 5PM – 7PM
Burial will be a union Cemetery on Saturday April 1, 2023 at 1PM
A celebration of life will be held later in the spring in Rochester NY.
